Rameshwaram – Corridor to Heaven

The holiest place on a beautiful island with magnificient temples, carvings, handcrafted colourful pillars of the temples, takes your breath away. Religious town had a great historical value during the Ramayana era.

The temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva, in the center of the town. It is considered as one of the biggest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.  The Ramanatha Swamy Temple has the longest corridor in the world. People from across the world perform puja at the seashore.

History of the town

The coastal town is considered to be one of the Char Dhams & is named after Lord Ram, a living legend of the Ramayana. This beautiful place is on the edge of The Indian Ocean and attracts lots of tourist all round the year. The temple compound also consists of 108 holy wells and the water of each well has it’s own significance and flavour. It gives you the feeling of Moksha. Lord Rama established the lingaa by his own hands before conquering Sri Lanka to rescue his beloved wife Sita. This is the place where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva to get rid of the sin of killing Ravana.

This is the hometown of the Missile Man of India, former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

This is located on the Pamban Island, which is separated from the mainland by the Pamban Channel and connected by the Pamban Bridge.

Dhanushkodi

It is also an important spot on the Rameshwaram island and it means the end of the bow. It is also famous for Lord Rama who built the bridge of floating stones to Sri Lanka. It is also called a Fisherman’s Island and was also an old trade town of the historic Rameshwaram. Presently, few fisherman families live here and sell real gems and stone jewellery. This scerenic town got submerged in Rameshwaram Cyclone in 1964.

Getting there is also a beautiful  thrilling experience by jeep which is being run by trained fishermen only. It boast your spirits high as the jeep crosses the Indian Ocean and takes you to Dhanushkodi. The ruins here tell there own story that once it had a great historic value.

Getting there

By air: There is no direct flight from the major cities to Rameshwaram. The nearest airport is Madurai and follow the road routes.

By road:  It is well connected to the different major cities of the country. Nearest major cities are Chennai and Madurai.

By train:  The town is very well connected by the rail routes from Chennai and Madurai.
